Trunk or Treat

Mathias was bent over the bucket for a long time looking for just the right treat.

Got one!

Papa Wallace helping Mathias with his pumpkin.
We spent Halloween in Rexburg, ID this year with my parents and sisters. My sister's ward was having a Trunk or Treat and the kids had a blast. Mathias got more candy than a 2 year old needs but he was happy about it.

Smart Alec

Mathias can be such a smart alec sometimes. The other day when I was making his birthday cake, Mathias was drumming on the kitchen table with some wood dowels that I was using for the arms and legs of his cake. I asked him to stop drumming on the table because I didn't want him to scratch or ding the finish. Mathias looked at me, stopped drumming ON the table and started drumming UNDER the table with a huge grin on his face.

Birthday Cake

We celebrated Mathias's birthday this weekend since we will be out of town the weekend closest to his birthday on October 30.

The monster cake I made for Mathias.

Mathias has been so excited for birthday cake the last few days. He has been running around saying, "Birthday cake!" and then pretends to blow out the candles. As you can see from the video, Brian had to light the candles a few times to make it through the Happy Birthday song.

Presents!!!

Mathias knew exactly what to do with his presents.

He had to get every piece of paper off the box before he would see what was inside.

Mathias got the GeoTrax Grand Central Station train set and he loves it.

Penny Candy???

Mathias is such a good kid but every once in a while he does something that makes us shake our heads and ask, "why?" On wednesday night Mathias found two pennies on the table and was playing with them the way he usually does. He will carry the money around announcing to everyone that he has money and then puts it in his pocket. I was in the kitchen making dinner and Mathias was over by the table when he started caughing and choking. He came over to me and he was gagging and choking on something. I immediately flipped him over my knee and hit him on the back. He stopped choking and swallowed hard. I asked him what he had in his mouth and he replied, "Money, bye, bye." I was thinking, "Oh, crap!" and told Brian what happened. (He heard it happening but was in the other room.) I went over to the table to look for the pennies thinking maybe he got into the candy on the table and that was what he was choking on. Nope. There was only one penny on the table. Mathias started talking about having money in his mouth and saying bye, bye. All this from the child that NEVER put anything other than food into his mouth. We gave Mathias a drink to see if it was stuck in his esophagus and luckily he was able to eat and drink just fine. In fact, Mathias didn't seem bothered at all. I called my sister, Amy, because her son had done this twice and asked what we should do. Amy said the first time they waited a few days for the penny to pass on its own and when it didn't and he got sick, they took him to the ER. The second time it was caught in his throat and they had to take him into the ER right away. Either way, she said we should take him in to have an x-ray just to make sure it isn't stuck anywhere.

Since Mathias was able to eat OK and didn't seem bothered by the fact that he had just swallowed a penny, we decided to wait and call the doctor in the morning. The next morning I called the pediatrician's office and asked them how long we should wait for the penny to pass on its own before bringing Mathias in. The nurse told me that I needed to bring him in that day for an x-ray because of his age. I called Brian at work and told him what was going on and about 20 minutes later he called me back and said he was on his way home. I was grateful he came home to go with us since I couldn't be with Mathias during the x-ray because I'm pregnant.

We got to the doctor's office and the doctor examined Mathias. Everything seemed to be fine from the outside but we still needed the x-ray to see where the penny was. The doctor was laughing at the situation because she had another little boy in the next room who had done the same thing. We later saw his x-ray next to Mathias's.

We went over to the x-ray area and Brian took Mathias in while I waited helplessly in the waiting room. After they had been gone for a minute, I could hear my poor little boy screaming for dear life. I felt so bad, but there was nothing I could do. Brian said he had to undress Mathias so that the snaps on his clothes would not interfere with the x-ray. Mathias did not like anything about that room. The technician had Brian lay Mathias down on the table and Mathias would not hold still so they had to strap him down with his hands over his head. Brian said that Mathias was so strong that it took THREE people to strap him down to the table. I heard a brief break in the crying and I guess Mathias liked looking at the lights of the x-ray machine. Then the screaming started back up. Brian got him dressed again and came out with the x-ray.

We went back over to where the doctor was waiting for us and she looked at the x-ray. The penny was still in Mathias's stomach resting on a lot of food. The doctor said that it can take up to THREE WEEKS for the penny to pass! I can't believe it can take that long. But, there is no danger to Mathias unless it gets stuck somewhere which is unlikely. So, until it passes, Brian and I get to search Mathias's poop looking for the penny. Just let me tell you how pleasant that is. Hopefully the penny will come out soon and there will not be any problems. I'm still shaking my head at the whole situation.

Animal Sounds

I was finally able to get Mathias on camera doing a few of his animal sounds. The elephant sound is our favorite.

4th Photo Tag...

There is a lot of tag going on lately. :) I was tagged by Alisha on this one.

This tag entails posting the 4th picture within the 4th picture file in My Pictures!

This is Mathias on Christmas Eve 2006. He is almost 2 months old in this picture. We were visiting Brian's parents in Rexburg and we were getting ready to head back to my parent's house. I bundled Mathias in his car seat and the blanket worked its way up or he slid down. Anyway, we turned around to get him and all we could see were his big brown eyes and they were not blinking. So cute.

I tag...Sheena, Camille, Melissa, Annie, Johanna and anyone else that wants to play! :)

Six Random Things About Us...

I have been tagged by Sheena, so here are six random things about us.

1. I have to use a straw when I drink chocolate milk. It just tastes better that way.

2. I have to wear rubber gloves when cleaning or doing the dishes. Pink for the kitchen, yellow for the bathroom.

3. Brian loves the smell of babies.

Mathias and Brian November 2006

4. Mathias loves to tickle his face and ears with feathers, tags on blankets or my hair. He does it the most when he is tired or upset.

Mathias won't pose for a specific picture, so this one will have to do. :)

5. I love to read in a nice warm bubble bath. Sorry, no pictures were available.

6. Mathias loves to read Miss Spider's Wedding. Sometimes the only way to get him to stop doing something is to tell him that he is being mean like the spider.

I tag Melissa, Annie, Becky, Johanna, Jessica, Alisha and anyone else that wants to play along. :)

Careful What You Say...

Mathias is talking quite a bit now so we have to be careful what we say around him because he will repeat it. The other day I was helping him with a puzzle, he would do a piece and then I would do a piece. (He is also learning about sharing.) It was my turn and he had had enough of my help. Mathias grabbed my had with the puzzle piece, looked me straight in the eye and said, "Share, Jeez!" Then he took the puzzle piece and finished the puzzle.

All in a Row...

Brian and I had to chuckle when we saw what Mathias had done with the measuring cups. A few nights before he emptied out my kitchen gadget drawer and lined them all up down the hall. I don't know why we spend money on toys. Mathias is so funny and likes to copy what we do. He started doing this after Brian showed him how to line up his animals in a row.

Little Boys

Little boys are so funny! I'm sure little girls are too, but I don't have one. :) Mathias was crying this morning when he woke up and upon entering his room, I found out why. He was laying in his crib trying to put his pajama pants back on upside down and inside out. Instead of putting his feet in the right way, he was trying to put his feet in from the bottom of the leg where his foot should come out. He was really mad because he couldn't put his pants on. The other day, Brian went to get him up from his nap and when Brian walked into his room, Mathias handed him his diaper. Any time we get up from sitting, Mathias will run and steal our seat. He also tries to tickle us if he finds a feather from a pillow or the tag on a blanket. The poor kid still can't jump. It's so funny to watch him try. He can only get one foot off the floor but thinks he is jumping really high. OK, one more. :) I was giving Mathias a hair cut the other day and he was really worried when he saw the hair falling onto the floor. He kept pointing to the hair saying with wide eyes, "Uh-oh! Uh-oh! Uh-oh, Mommy!" Mathias is such a cute little boy and we love him so much. He keeps us laughing everyday.

On a side note, I went to the doctor yesterday and so far everything looks good. We should be able to find out the baby's gender in about another month. I can't wait!

Mathias still loves to read stories. After I read him this story a few times he sat down on the floor and read it to us.

Marble Shoot

Brian and Mathias spent an afternoon playing with marbles and building a marble shoot. It has kept Mathias pretty busy the last few days.
